Why you need to manage business listings

Keeping your business listings consistent and correct across the internet is the basis of local SEO. Putting your info on your website is not enough because Google uses multiple directories to cross-check and validate the name, address, phone number (NAP), and other business data.

That is why you need to manage your business data on various maps, apps, search engines, social networks, and vertical directories like Yelp, TripAdvisor, Foursquare, and the like.

Step 1. Check how accurate your business data is across the Internet

When starting the tool, you will be asked to enter your business name. The tool will then submit your business data (e.g. zip code, street address, and phone number) consistently to a number of directories (70+ for the US, 40+ for other countries).

What directories does Semrush distribute citations to with the Listing Management tool? 

Amazon Alexa, Apple, Bing, and Google are amongst other directories, so your business will become voice search-ready.

Additionally, you can manage and optimize Google Business Profile and Facebook listings (the most important local SEO directories), including business hours, work days, photos, and payment options.



The tool will provide you with a list of the most prominent directories, as well as the status of them:

• Issues not found: your business is present in the directory, the data is correct, and no further action is needed.
• Wrong business name/ no phone number/ no address: your business is present in the directory, but its data is incorrect (discrepancies are highlighted in orange) – the tool can fix this for you.
• Not present: your business is not present in the directory, and you are missing out on potential customers – the tool can add it.  
• Unknown: the directory with the listing does not respond at the moment, or the directory does not support that kind of business (e.g. Tripadvisor only accepts businesses in the Hospitality area).

You can export this data using the Export to PDF button in the top right corner if you have any paid subscription. 

Step 2. Distribute your business data automatically to the most authoritative directories 

Listing Management can distribute your local business information to citation websites and ensure that your information is unified across all listings online.

This step requires you to purchase a location. Paid subscribers get to employ Listing Management for $20 per location per month. For $40 per month, a Listing Management location can be upgraded to the Premium level, which unlocks additional tools and features, such as an option to reply to Google Business Reviews with AI tools, Map Rank Tracker, and extended Review Analytics.

After you purchase the location, you can edit the information in one place and get consistent and correct business data in all directories at once. There will be no changes made without your input.
 
The location limits depend on the country of the business: How many locations can I have? Is there a limit?
 
To purchase a location:

• If you have a Semrush paid plan, you can purchase from the pricing page or from the Listing Management start page
• If you don't have a paid Semrush plan, you need to head to the Listing Management start page, start with a free scan, and then continue to location purchase.

Step 3. Set up your location to manage your business presence in online directories

After you purchase your Semrush Local plan, you’ll need to set up your location. If you’ve already completed a business scan check, some of these steps may have already been completed. Just skip those and move to the next. 

You can choose to set up the location manually or with Google Business Profile (GBP). 

To set the location up manually: 

• Go to Semrush.com > Listing Management and enter the business name of the location you would like to set up 
• Get the overview of your business online presence and press the “Set up manually” button
• Fill in your business information
• Review data to make sure it’s accurate 
• Click “Start distributing info”

To set the location up with GBP:  

• Go to Semrush.com > Listing Management and enter the business name of the location you would like to set up 
• Get the overview of your business online presence and press the “Set up with Google” button
• You’ll be prompted to choose a Google account, business profile, and grant permissions
• Check if the information collected from your Google account is correct 
• Click the “distribute business info” button 

After you set up your location, it can take up to three days for your information to be verified, then distribution time to directories may vary and could take up to 14 days. You can always see your most updated status in the Semrush Local dashboard.

Once your location setup is complete, enhance your profile with additional information about your business. Go to Location and select “Edit business info”.

Then, navigate through additional fields and add your business hours, description, and connect Google Business Profile, Facebook, and more. Follow this article for the tips on how to fill in your business info. Then hit “Save changes”, and your new updated details or changes will be distributed to directories our tool supports. 

If you set up your first Premium location in the country, you will see the Getting Started widget. This widget will guide you through the tool to establish a connection with GBP, explore GBP insights, configure Auto-replies settings, and set up your campaign in Map Rank Tracker.

Step 4. Suppress Duplicates, Track Local Rankings, Get Performance Reports, Monitor Reviews and User Suggestions

You get six tabs when you purchase a location. You can see their detailed description in the relevant articles, and here’s a brief description:

Overview tab

Get the overall picture of how well all of your connected businesses perform in local search (how often you were searched and displayed), monitor all updates, follow the recommendations.

Locations tab 

Monitor and update information in the local SEO directories.

Duplicates tab

Keep your listings free of malicious duplicates and help potential customers find you quickly online and offline, suppress duplicates in one click.

User Suggestions tab

If users suggest changing information that they feel is incorrect, you will see the suggestions in this tab and can easily choose to approve or reject them.

Review Management tab

Monitor reviews and ratings from different sources for all locations. Read more about the Review Management tool here.

Review Analytics tab

Compile reports about competitors’ reviews on Google and get analytics about their review profiles.

Local Rankings tab

See how well your business ranks when searching from any city location, analyze the trend of your position among all local businesses on Google local finder.

Step 5. Get unique additional information via email notifications

After you set up a location (after approx. 1.5 months) you will start receiving location reports via email every 2 weeks. With these emails, you can analyze how well the location performs in search engines and directories.

This information is unique—you won’t find it in the tool interface nor in My Reports.

The email contains 5 charts, including:

• Searches - the number of times your listings were displayed in search results in directories, not including Yelp, Facebook, Bing, and Google search.
• Profile Views - the number of times your listings were viewed. Listings on Yelp, Bing, and Google are not considered.
• Facebook Page Views - connect your Facebook Account in Listing Management to get this information.
• Google Search Views - connect your Google Business Profile Account in Listing Management to get this information.
• Google Map Views - connect your Google Business Profile Account in Listing Management to get this information.

You will also be notified with a weekly email if your business has received a review of 2 stars or less.
